Best breakdown of objectification in comics EVER.

To a comment about "real life" versus comics, the_rejection:

Art imitates life. Young men and women, boys and girls are given a thousand images that say: men are strong. Women are sexy.

men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy

And then women are inappropriately touched at the workplace so often that they barely notice it, leered at because they dare to walk outside, called "honey" and "sweety," ignored for being pretty, ignored for being ugly, ignored for being fat, paid less, judged differently, depicted as whores and girlfriends and bimbos, because the world says

men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy men are strong women are sexy

Ignore him, don't read it, don't think that deeply, I didn't notice anything sexist and *I'm* a woman, but his muscles are unrealistically big like her boobs (men are strong women are sexy), get over it, just tell him off, if I were a woman I wouldn't let someone do that to me/say that to me, you're just painting yourself as a victim, sex sells honey baby sweety cutie pie i was just flirting why won't you let me touch you why do you ignore me bitch whore ice queen it'snotrealignoreitdon'tdoanythingaboutitandit'llgoaway

Context is strong AND sexy.

This. Has made my day.

Best righteous indignation start to a Monday EVER.

In comics the reverse is true as well. Women are strong, men are sexy.

Find me a comic where this is true and I might not think that you're an idiot.

Weirdly now I want to see Superman in one of Supergirl's outfits . . .

The context is pretty epic, also. Had not heard about this. I love how Joe Quesada's first response to critique is to tell them NOT to read Marvel comics :) INGENIOUS BUSINESS STRATEGY

I've taken it to heart, and I'm not spending my money on their crap. Not that I did in the first place.

Does it invalidate everything in the post when I made the bottom pic my desktop?

No, because the Supergirls are fucking awesome. I would prefer if Superman wasn't in the pic, though. :|

I like the added effect of Superman hovering in the background of the second pic like a paternal figure.

Ceiling Superman is watching you fap over his relatives.

Hmm. There have been properly done stories of Wonder Woman--well-drawn to show that she does have muscle but not in an gross kind of way. The best I can think of is Phil Jimenez. I loved how he portrayed her--gentle, but strong, sexy, but in a lovely kind of way.

My brain keeps parsing that text as "strong women are sexy" and I don't even see the men in the sentence at all. Heh.

Me too! Clearly, we're on to something with the not seeing men thing.

I am right onboard with this - it was a big reason I dropped American comics. It's a teenage boy ghetto.

And oh, Joe Quesada, never stop being a douchebag. I liked you better when you were a little-known X-Factor artist. Also, getting J. Scott Campbell to draw a comic about girls 'bonding'? PURE FUCKING GENIUS, no wonder women want to scalp you.

Or it would be if teenage boys read comics anymore.

It is true that Ross Campbell has rather different taste in women to your average Marvel artist.

This. This is why I can never really get into comics. Which is sad, because there are a lot of great characters in comics. But I can only take a very small amount before the rage boils. And it isn't just sexism. There's anti-fatness, a near-total absence of gay people and trans people, misrepresentation of several subcultures, not polyamory, no asexuals... it goes on and on.

For many years I've had a yen to write my own comics just to battle this, but that's a dumb reason to write your own anything: just because it isn't there. I don't have any real desire to write or do comics beyond that, so I just gave it up.

O and don't get me started on anime/manga....

I love comics. I am trying to improve my drawing skills so I can one day make my own, and they will have people who are not white, not perfect, not conventionally pretty, not heterosexual, not skinny, and there will be damn reckoning.

I have one manga that I like. One. And a couple that I kind of enjoy casually. Because the flaws in much of the genre are so glaring and bad and the fandom generally so insane that I can't get into it.
