In the comments in this post about "The War on Christmas", genepool23 broke it down for us:

Ever since this rediculous "War on Christmas" nonsense started up this year, it seems I can't say "Merry Christmas" to a stranger without it sparking some kind of winking nodding conversation about how "you're actually allowed to say that here?" Like by wishing them Merry Christmas I have completed some kind of fucking secret republican handshake or something, acknowledging that I am "one of them" and therefor agree with all their politics. Just like saying "Happy Holidays" is a signal to all that you are an America-hating godless liberal pinko, Saying "Merry Christmas" means that you listen to Bill O'Reilly, think that the atheist gay communist conspiracy is out to murder the baby Jesus, end Nascar, teach the Kama Sutra in kindergarten and harvest babies' brains for hangnail research.

I laughed. I cried. It was better than "Cats".

Edit: genepool23 is not a wackjob, as s/he believes it comes across without context. So. Read the context. genepool23 is making an excellent point. (but I don't know how to link it directly to the comment itself, so you'll have to do a bunch of scrolling - sorry)

Edited one more time for full clarity...and because I'm a failure at this...
