For those of you that have recently come to be my journal friends who are NOT from New Mexico, let me explain to you what Zozobra is.
In our hoity-toity capital city, there is this tradition where they make this giant paper man. And by giant, I really mean giant. Several hundred feet tall. Anyway. They make him so that his mouth flaps open. And every year, in the center of the city, THEY BURN HIM. YES. THEY SET A GIANT PAPER MAN AFLAME. Now, that wouldn't be terrible, but there is a (real) man, and he is making moaning and groaning noises into a very loud sound system, and it's like.. Supposed to scare the evil spirits away. Well. Evil spirits and worries and all the bad things. But like. DOES ZOZOBRA REALLY HAVE TO SOUND LIKE HE'S A REAL BURNING MAN? NO. HE DOES NOT.
For the longest time, I had no idea that the noises were made by some other dude. I thought that they were caused by the spirits screaming because they were being tortured. And it doesn't help that Zozobra's mouth flaps open to make him look like he's screaming.
P.S. I DIDN'T MENTION THAT HE MOVES. ZOZOBRA. WRITHES IN PAIN. WHILE BEING BURNT.
