letter of the law

A parent wanted "fantasy books with no magic" for her children. In a comment thread on library_mofo, oneiriad suggested

Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner doesn't have any magic, nor does the sequel The Privilege of the Sword. They're quite lovely books, actually - sort of Jane Austen meets Alexandre Dumas with swordsmen and their young gentlemen university students and intrigue and drama and a cross-dressing girl with a crazy and depraved uncle - but no magic :-)
